What is FIRST? FIRST is an acronym, which stands for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology". The FIRST organization was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, who is President and owner of DEKA Research & Development Corporation, a Manchester, New Hampshire-based company. DEKA specializes in advanced technologies in medical equipment. A physicist, engineer, and inventor, he holds more than 100 US patents. His many inventions include the "I - Bot" (a wheel chair designed to climb over stairs and other objects) and the "SEGWAY" ( a mobile scooter that people can use to transport themselves building to building without having to walk ). The FIRST Robotics Competition is a National engineering contest which gives High School Students and Engineers the chance to put their heads together and come up with a potential "Champion Robot". Schools participating in FIRST usually receive financial aid or Engineers from the Businesses that Sponsors them. FIRST Gives all schools participating to Design, Build and Test their robot with in a 6 week period. Each Year in January Dean Kamen and FIRST Advisor Woodie Flowers unveil the new game in which Students and Engineers (IF ANY) build their robot that can perform specific tasks in that game. Each year the game changes which means the school must build a new robot in order to participate. Like any other Sport their are Judges and Referees who are Scoring, Awarding, Judging and making sure all rules are being followed Safely at this Competition.
